Brain
Medulla Oblongata
Life's most essential control centre
Overview
The medulla oblongata is the lowest part of the brainstem, continuous with the spinal cord. Despite its small size, it houses the cardiovascular and respiratory control centres that maintain heartbeat, breathing, and blood pressure. It also manages essential reflexes: coughing, sneezing, swallowing, and vomiting.
Function
- Controls heart rate and blood pressure (cardiovascular centre)
- Governs breathing rhythm (respiratory centre)
- Mediates swallowing, coughing, sneezing, and gagging
- Relays sensory and motor signals between brain and spinal cord
- Decussation: motor fibres cross sides here
Key Facts
- The medulla crosses (decussates) the motor tracts—explaining contralateral control
- Damage to the medulla is immediately life-threatening
- Opioid overdose death occurs via medullary inhibition of breathing
- The medulla is phylogenetically the oldest brain region
