Brain
Cerebrum
The largest division of the brain
Overview
The cerebrum is the largest part of the brain, occupying about 85% of its total weight. It is divided into two hemispheres—left and right—connected by the corpus callosum. The outer layer, the cerebral cortex, is responsible for higher-order functions including thought, language, memory, and voluntary movement.
Function
- Controls voluntary movement and sensory processing
- Responsible for language, reasoning, and problem-solving
- Stores long-term memories
- Processes visual, auditory, and tactile information
- Regulates personality and emotional responses
Key Facts
- The cerebral cortex contains ~16 billion neurons
- Folding (gyri and sulci) increases surface area 3-fold
- Left hemisphere controls the right side of the body and vice versa
- The cerebrum continues developing until the mid-20s
